Ice Skating in London - aka Christmas in July

Rebecca O'LoughlinComment

The hot summer we're having in England this summer has me craving cooler days, ice cream, swimming pools, and generally thinking cold thoughts. Which turned my memory back to one of my favorite activities in the winter - ice skating!! I grew up in Western NY, near Lake Ontario. Which means, in three words: Lake Effect Snow. Basically it snows pretty much nonstop all winter long (no such thing as snow days in that neck of the woods!) and everything water becomes ice. And even if there isn't a frozen pond or lake to glide on, there are numerous indoor skating rinks because hello, it is hockey country!

I will never claim to be able to play hockey - although I love watching it, such a fast-paced sport and full of fights ;) - but I absolutely adore ice skating. I bought my own set of figure skates with my birthday money at 16 and they have traveled with me ever since. London sets up ice skating rinks outdoors at a number of sites across the city each winter - the Canary Wharf park, Somerset House, the Natural History Museum, the Tower of London (my favorite!), and more. I've had the pleasure of skating at several of them - and one year, for 'our' Christmas celebration, M took me ice skating at Somerset House, where he used to work. (Before we were married we spent Christmases separately, each with our own families, so we did 'our' Christmas earlier in the month when we were both still in London.)

M will hold his hands up and say he gave it a shot but will *never* like ice skating. But I give him major props for trying it, and for letting me enjoy the full hour on the ice even after he realized he hated it. :) Afterwards we had gorgeous hot chocolate at the Tiffany pop-up cafe, and then since I was taking ballet at the time and had always wanted to see it, M surprised me with tickets to The Nutcracker. A great pre-Christmas celebration!
